Key result200+ BOM structures supported in Excel, alongside procurement, to help shorten lead times
Context
The company manufactures industrial machinery. From February to September 2023 I worked as a manufacturing engineering intern, between the design office, the shop floor and procurement.
What I did
- Helped create 3D models and manufacturing drawings in SolidWorks, supporting a reduction in design-to-fabrication errors.
- Supported the management of 200+ bill-of-materials structures in Excel and worked with procurement to help shorten lead times.
- Checked drawings and BOMs against each other so that what is ordered matches what is drawn.
What I took away
Most fabrication errors are information errors: a missing revision, a part number that does not match, a dimension that was never toleranced. Clean models, consistent drawings and an accurate BOM prevent them long before the first chip is cut.
